Quando falamos de “humanidades digitais”, geralmente pensamos em aplicar ferramentas computacionais a problemas humanísticos. Mas os agentes de IA invertem essa relação: não somos nós que aplicamos a máquina aos textos, é a máquina que está lendo, interpretando e respondendo aos nossos textos de maneiras que desafiam nossas categorias tradicionais.
Um agente de IA não é apenas uma ferramenta de busca avançada. Ele planeja, decide, executa e aprende. No contexto das humanidades, isso significa que o agente pode identificar padrões em acervos documentais que um pesquisador humano levaria anos para perceber, mas também pode reproduzir vieses presentes nos dados de treinamento de formas sutis e difíceis de detectar.
Entre o instrumento e o interlocutor
Há uma diferença fundamental entre usar um software de análise de texto e trabalhar com um agente que conversa, propõe, questiona. No primeiro caso, o pesquisador mantém o controle epistêmico: ele formula a pergunta e a máquina responde. No segundo, o agente pode reformular a pergunta, sugerir caminhos não explorados, ou mesmo discordar.
Isso não é necessariamente um problema. Pode ser produtivamente desafiador. Mas exige que repensemos o que significa “autoria” em um texto produzido em colaboração com um agente de IA.
O que fica, o que muda
A prática arquivística, por exemplo, tem regras claras de descrição e proveniência. Um agente de IA pode ajudar a descrever fundos documentais inteiros em horas, mas a validação humana continua sendo necessária, não por desconfiança, mas porque a descrição arquivística é um ato interpretativo, não apenas classificatório.

The artificial synapse
When we speak of “digital humanities,” we usually think of applying computational tools to humanistic problems. But AI agents invert this relationship: it is no longer us who apply the machine to texts, it is the machine that is reading, interpreting, and responding to our texts in ways that challenge our traditional categories.
An AI agent is not just an advanced search tool. It plans, decides, executes, and learns. In the context of the humanities, this means that the agent can identify patterns in documentary collections that a human researcher would take years to perceive, but it can also reproduce biases present in training data in subtle and hard-to-detect ways.
Between tool and interlocutor
There is a fundamental difference between using text analysis software and working with an agent that converses, proposes, questions. In the first case, the researcher maintains epistemic control: they formulate the question and the machine answers. In the second, the agent can reframe the question, suggest unexplored paths, or even disagree.
This is not necessarily a problem. It can be productively challenging. But it requires us to rethink what “authorship” means in a text produced in collaboration with an AI agent.
What remains, what changes
Archival practice, for example, has clear rules of description and provenance. An AI agent can help describe entire documentary fonds in hours, but human validation remains necessary, not out of distrust, but because archival description is an interpretive act, not merely classificatory.
